Burke Seeks Defensive Excellence : Release Veteran FS David Azevedo

Maybe Ian Schultz thought being drafted in the 3rd round secured him a spot on the roster. Maybe veteran Azevedo thought his 11 years of pro experience was invaluable to a young secondary and maybe Stovall just needed to make a few more plays during preseason to change Burke's mind. "We only want the best players on this team and it doesn't matter how you got here or what round we took you in", remarked Burke. "If you bring the pain on every play, this defense will have a spot for you".
Kris Halpern outplayed Schulz whenever he was on the field and the coaches took notice. “I must say I was disappointed in falling to the 6th round of the draft, but I’m looking to make the Stallions very happy they took a change on me,” exclaimed Halpern after getting news of the cuts via his agent. He and Bennie Stevenson (Iowa) beat the odds and join draft starters Herzog, Glaser, and Shanahan on the Stallions 53-man roster.
Both Herzog and Shanahan turned in above average games against Boston to cap a preseason where they got plenty of times in their respective positions. Shanahan was impressive enough that Burke saw no reason to hold him back by asking him to play behind Azevedo this season. “I feel good about the defensive backs right now. The safeties are a little green but they haves tons of potential”, offered Burke. “We wish David (Azevedo) the best of luck and thank him for the outstanding football he’s played for us.
The position battles have been settled. Veteran NT Harold Bryant was able to hold off rookie NT Glaser but it’s only a matter of time before Neil takes the job. Tyler looks to have been unseated as the slot receiver by Man Perales and Kevin Key will no longer split time at TE as he easily beat out Bracy this preseason.
The season gets underway this Sunday as the Horses host the Assassins who have been phenomenal in preseason play and have been barking for a chance to prove they are better than the Stallions this year.
