  • Newark Bulldogs offseason report

The draft is finally over and the Newark Bulldogs have made some offseason moves to help bolster the offense. All in all, the Bulldogs drafted 10 players. Here is a rundown on new aquisitions.

    QB

The Bulldogs acquired QB Scott Nelson from the Hartford Grizzlies. His talent is out weighed by his proness to injury. GM Matt hopes he can somehow remain healthy for a season. Nelson has great mobility and makes good decisions. He's replacing a very popular Chris Chaplin, and has big shoes to fill. Newark was unable to find a dancing partner at the end of the first round, where it was rumoured that that they wanted to draft QB Will Irby. Irby ended up going to defending Imperial bowl champs, Madison Demons

    RB

The Bulldogs drafted the best player in the draft, Alan Crespo. GM Matt was forced into some aggressive negotiations with a number of teams to have the privilage of drafting Crespo. Although he has yet to be signed, Crespo will give the Bulldogs a dominant running game that the team has so desparately wanted. Gone is former 1000yd back Jerry Daugherty.

    WR

Newark drafted 2 WR's in this years draft. In the first round they nabbed Walter Walker. Walter had 14 TDs and over 1000yds last season with the Hurricanes. He has solid speed and has a lot of big play potential. With their 17th pick of the 5th round, the Bulldogs took another big play guy and drafted Reuben Caffrey. Caffrey has great speed and agility, and could end up as the 3rd WR. These 2 big targets should help Scott Nelson's transition to Newark

    OL

In a blockbuster deal the Bulldogs acquired the highly regarded LT Irwin Kao. Kao is considered one of the best OL in the league. With this move, T Fabian Villa will move to the right side. The Bulldogs also signed Granville Fleetwood from Houston. Fleetwood will serve as a solid backup on the line. In the 4th round the Bulldogs also selected T Bryant Jenkins. Jenkins may make the move to C. GM Matt liked his 20 for 37 KRB with 0 SA in college. With this move, Newark may find vetern G Charles Runkle expendable

    K

The Bulldogs drafted a kicker for the first time. Jermaine Singleton may proove to be the opening day kicker for this team. The Bulldogs are hoping that he can fill that void.

    DL

With the trade of all pro DE Justin Jones, Newark has found an opening on the once strong DL. In the 3rd round they drafted Jones' replacement, Karl Dodge. Dodge racked up 10 sacks for Penn state last year and the Bulldogs are hoping he'll do much of the same this year. Waiting in the wings are both Jamal Etter and Russell Dixon. Newark also drafted DT Archie Burke. Burke will serve as a backup to Pruitt and Brown.

    LB

Domingo Persaud is not getting any younger, and gone is LB Chris Westerfield. The Bulldogs made the first step in revamping the LB corps when they drafted Donald Blades in the 6th round. Michael Grafton should take over Westerfields starting job at OLB

    DB
CB Anthony Autry was traded in order to acquire Alan Crespo. Mack Mcguire should step in as the starting CB opposite of Stephen Jaynes. The Bulldogs also have a lot of depth at the CB and S positions with good players like Jake Ramirez, Edward Bufford, and Edward Cavanaugh. They also drafted S Archie Petrie and Norman Hitchcock. Petrie is going to make the switch to CB and may end up as the nickel back, due to his ability to play the run.

Overall the Bulldogs season was busy. They made some moves to try and better themselves offensively. Only time will tell if the moves were favourable.

    Can't wait for training camp.
