ive come to this conclussion. shows like Coach are hard to get into for me because i cant TRULY believe he is a coach at a major (mid) college. The situations are all so very sitcomy to me, the lack of realism hurts it.

take a show like malcolm in the middle for instance. i can truly believe that family exists, therefore jokes that do and dont pertain to the base foundation of the show are treated equally.

      Now onto other things.

Dharma & Greg, what went wrong?

Im not sure to tell you the truth. I think it was caught in a netherworld alot of semi succesfull shows get trapped in. it ran 5 seasons, on the brink of raising to that higher echelon of remembered tv shows, or burning out. Well it burned out. In trying to examine why, I saw 2 things happen.

      1) Jenna Elfman changed her look in season 2. Hogwash you say? how can this be a major detriment to a show? Well ok, lets examine.
Season 1 is about this carefree, hippie chick and her wild ideas, and jenna elfman fit the role to a tee. Every dharma based comedy situation worked, because she looked the character you would imagine.

In season 2 they accnetuated her beuaty more, they really tore down some of the everygirl characterists of her appearance and now she starts looking like a runway hippie, the length of her face was accentuated more, gone was the sort of cherubic profile, and in came a more pronounced, striking profile.

The chang ein look also brought a slight, very slight change to the characters tone as seasons 2 and 3 progressed. with the more streamlined facial features they brought in they also streamlined the character a bit. Gone were the carefree dharma rumble bumble and in came a more rigid approach the characters motives. Now when she did something you got the sense it was because what the character should do, not would do.

The initial pairing of stuffy family and the hippie family worked really well in the first season, but as time went on all of dharmas mother earth, lets all celebrate, energy became focused on gregs family. Now im gonna get controversial. All aspects of that particular dycothemy worked, except for Dharma. Everyone on the show worked that storyline much more effectivly than the dharma character, and why is that? because they didnt have to do it as often. Larry/Kitty interaction was great because it was less prevelant, they didn't wear it out.

Season 4 was a tough one. They had been declining for 2 seasons, not sharply, but enough. So they brought out the old comedy standby of a harrowing tragedy. yeah, im talking about the near breakup and then the car accident. People who watch comedies wanna laugh, not spend half a season on dharma & greg breaking up and then another half on dharmas recovery from a broken hip. it misaligned the show, something a real girl named Dharma would of known.

Things actually got little better in season 5, but by then it was already cooked.

      some mistakes made

      1) changing dharmas appearance.
      2) dharma vs gregs family was the focus of too many episodes.
      3) abby having a baby. i mean good lord, a new baby, a breakup and a car accident all in the span of 1 season, talk about throwing everything at the wall to see what stick.
      4) constant moving people around. not just for lack of continuity, but pete and the secretaryt always follwed greg where he went, it got really tired after awhile, it wasnt even a good running joke because it didnt happen enough to be absurd, just enough to be annoying, a real comedy no no.
      5) the character of greg never played off of anyone as well as he played off of dharma. now, greg had a good comedic repoire with everyone, but what i mean is that greg loved dharma, his love of her made the interactions alot more interesting than, for instance, pete. I mean look at the other main character interactions he had on the show. with pete and with his mother. there was no soluble reason why he would like either of them. Pete is simply dropped in as his best friend, although there is no reason why greg would choose pete as a best friend, he never really even shows that he likes him, but yet he's his comedic partner on the show. I need a relationship i can understand, and this one had no explanation.
and then with his mother, a really just not nice person. Theres never any character development that disscuses why greg puts up with her at the least, and allows her to be such a bain on the woman he loves at the most.

i guess what im saying is that greg, outside of dharma, served no real function, a horrible lack of development.

      In summation

Season 1- Pure Gold, sitcoms rarely get as good as this got. But the trouble is that it would be hard to sustain, because in order to develop the characters, they have to change, and then you change what is so great about this debut season.

Season 2 & Season 3 1/2- Still top notch quality, better than you will usuaily find from this sort of fare, but the decline was beggining. Everything they did to evolve the joke failed. Instead of changing the situations around they changed the main character around, she got darker for lack of a better term, and the greg character continues to wander without much direction despite being given the major story arc of year 2.

Season 3 1/2 & season 4- Ok, here comes trouble. A baby, a breakup, a car accident. HELLO, WE NEED RATINGS. dEAR lord, just come to my house, blow me and beg me to watch, you couldnt look more desperate if you ran into a whorehouse with your dick out singing "dont you need somebody to love"

Season 5- A slight upswing, things got back to normal, but by now a season and a half had been wasted. they tried too many different things and they only really served to take the show so far off course that they would have needed 2 solid seasons to turn things around. they never got the chance.

      IN MEMORIAM
Dharma & Greg was a great sitcom......in its infancy.
Perhaps it wasnt a sitcom at all, perhaps it was a movie that ran for 20 hours. perhaps the sequel was nowhere near as good as the original, and thats what were left with, that bad taste. But do not think for a moment that this, in concept and execution, for at least 40 episodes, was as strong as any sitcom in history. You take your everybody loves raymond and gather round the evening fire with your family. me, im gonna curl up on a barstool at 4am with a box of frosted flakes and watch me some dharma & greg on my 12 inch black and white tv, cause thats where real emotion comes from.
      I luv British womenz.

          Jessie,

Now there was a show that got bastaradized from season 1 to season 2

season 2 saw the disappearance of her father and one of her brothers. She was left with Diego, her son and one brother. The least attractive of her female friends becomes a main character - meanwhile Jennifer Milmore's rack is not on screen nearly enough to make me happy, ok I am happy when it is on screen, it is just I would have wanted to be more happy.

            Suicanes Sexy Words

            1. Tinkle- So pure and sparkling and girlie. A nice little tinkle if both lustfull and femenine.

            2. Squat- Theres a beauty to the word that cant be described. Its a very moist word.

            3. Cualiflower- Have yer girl say it to you slowly......yeah, thats what im talkin bout.

            4. Hole- It aint sexy when you say it dude, but just listen to her say it. Dont have to be no dirty connotation, just listen to it. Theres some sort of engrained male psyche thing that makes that word so beautifull.

            5. Belly- I love me some belly, I love it when a girl says belly.

            6. Mount- Easily the most dominant word on the list, but neandrethal can also be sexy, dont forget that.

and thus ends todays class. go to sleep and dream of cookies, which would of been number 7 if they werent making me wanna puke right now

            I luv British womenz.

Dude, your absolutley spot on. That show was way above average in season 1, and all the stories were excellent, then all of the sudden it was all different and about 10x less funny.

Since this seems to be late night drunk talk let me chime in with a point I tried unsuccessfuly to make tonight (and many other nights) regarding lack of realism on camera...

NO TWO PEOPLE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD pulled a gun on each other and just stood there without pulling the trigger!!! I'll grant you that there is a percentage of humans that WILL pull a gun but NOT the trigger, but the percentage of those people that actually possess a heater at any point in time is so small that there WILL never be two in the same space at the same time both with the urge to pull gun but not trigger. In real life if you're already drawn and someone else is partially drawn the odds are 100% that you pull the trigger before they complete their draw... through either full intention of pulling the trigger every time you pull the tool or through human fear of seeing another pull one on you.

Many a hollywood movie are completely ruined based on this simple fact.

I don't like todays sitcoms much, and don't watch many of them. I miss the days of Mash and Cheers, and the new sticoms just dont' live up to them.

I almost got into friends, but once again I realized it was about mostly well off people and the worries they had. Sure Joey and Pheebee were poor, but they were the idiots. I evenutally came to the realization that it was nothign more than 90210, the middle age years.

I loved watching Enterprise, until they canceled it. I felt that it went back to the roots of the orignial series by haveing a cask that just clicked. Archer was forced to find a fine line between logic and emotion to solve the problems.

The Tupal drug habit was a great storry line, but they seemed to abondon it in season 4. Tucker leaving the Enterprise for the Columbia was a bit odd in the 4th season, but I think they were trying to save the show.

Archer had a great part in season three, where he had to become evil to complete the mission. The fourth dabbled in him forgiving himself, but all he did was have sex with the Columbia Captain.

In a Mirror, Darkly is just amazing. If you havn't seen it you have to if you like Trek. It is the evil alternate diminsion two parter. Very well done.

I have an unhealthy adition to 24, but I can never show up every week to watch it, so I buy the DVD set as soon as it comes out.

CSI caught my attention for a while. . but now there are just too many, all with carbon copies of the archtypes in the original.

I am kinda holding out hope that they do a CSI: Preston, Iowa. I've alwasy wondered who did it. The great Cow Tipping disaster of 97. That would be good TV.

I watch Keeping Up Appearances on PBS. It's a pretty funny English comedy which I'm guessing is fairly old now. That Hyacinth is a funny old lady.
